“Rotation modeled” Sunday Schools have become very popular among churches of all denominations. Churches that use this model are reporting consistently greater attendance, improved feedback, and greater all-around excitement among children and teachers. Consequently, to help bless CEC’s Children’s Ministry with similar success, we have transitioned our program into an exciting, new rotation model. What exactly is “rotation” Sunday school and what can I do to help, you ask. Well, the rotation model works like this…
The Concept - The overall idea of the rotation model is to teach major Bible stories and concepts through kid-friendly, inter-related workshops. For 3 weeks, children will study the same Bible story. However, each week, they will rotate into a new workshop/classroom to experience the story in a unique way.
Themed Rooms - CEC has created a wonderful area for our children called Kid’s Kingdom. Children ages pre-K through 5th grade learn of God’s works and our many blessings through activities in the Master Peace Theatre (performing arts room), Thou Art Studio (craft room), and the Garden of Eatin’ (food/science room).
The Players - Sunday School Teachers/Shepherds – These individuals commit to one 3-week rotation. They attend the rotation with the same group of children each week. Shepherds lead the group in prayer, tell the selected story, and assist the children with the workshop activities. Workshop Leaders – Each workshop requires one Leader. This individual commits to three consecutive weeks for a specific lesson. The Workshop Leader is responsible for teaching and leading the children through the selected activities for their workshop, making only minor adjustments each week, based on the age group. The curriculum is established, though Leaders can modify the suggested activities or add their own.
The Benefits The repetition of stories during the rotation model helps children have a true understanding of the Bible lessons. By the second or third week of the rotation, if children say that they understand the story, they have the opportunity to help tell the story to the class. Such teaching is a great learning opportunity. Also, through the workshop rotations, children experience a variety of learning environments using crafts, performing arts, food, and science activities. Teachers benefit, as they are only required to prepare one lesson every three weeks. Overall, rotation Sunday school provides a creative and exciting environment for both children and teachers to come to know and learn about Jesus Christ. We pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us all during this very exciting time in the life of our church and our Children’s Ministry.
